I appreciate the letter from the group of local GOP women admonishing the hateful rhetoric used by the state GOP and would encourage them to support their views with actions.
First of all, I would encourage you to indeed be a diverse coalition by changing the state GOP platform that says marriage should only be between a man and a woman. It seems contradictory to speak out against this action yet still have this discriminatory belief encoded in the organization’s fundamental beliefs.
The letter also states that the party is guided by “The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights,” so I would imagine you will expand your criticism of the national leader of the party whose actions and rhetoric on Jan. 6 and beyond clearly undermine the basic principles of democracy. I look forward to the party stating clearly that the election was free, fair, and not stolen and condemning the unfounded claims of those that continue to claim otherwise.
I would also hope that your focus on core values like individual freedom and limited government apply to a woman’s private decisions about her own body and that protecting our children would include measures that keep them from weapons capable of great harm and policies that also protect and support them after they are born like child poverty initiatives and family and medical leave.
The celebration of “diverse perspectives” that are “respected and debated thoughtfully” is also an excellent idea to focus on collectively. I hope this involves again extending your outrage over this action to the party’s national leader and his degrading rhetoric and actions toward women, immigrants, and even veterans.
Thank you for expressing the intentions of the local GOP. I look forward to the party adopting policies that align with values expressed in this letter.
