Topic of the Week: The Courage to Listen Restoring balance to our political process does not mean taking the mathematical average of two extremes and making policy around that. It does not mean filling a quota with an equal number of conservatives and liberals. It does mean having the courage to listen respectfully to those with whom you disagree. It may mean tolerating those whom you view as intolerant, at least enough not to censor them or infringe upon their rights. As New York Times columnist and author David French writes in his book, Divided We Fall, "Our nation is built from the ground up to handle political disagreement. It is not built to endure mass-scale dishonesty and vindictiveness." French makes the case that our laws, our system of government, work only when exercised by individuals guided by tolerance and grace, as much as they are guided by commitment to liberty and justice. Tolerance and grace demand courage. It takes courage to disagree, especially if you hold a viewpoint that may be different from one held by your tribe, your family, or your political party. We appreciate you, our RTB members, for having the courage and commitment to stay engaged and being willing to listen. Speaking of listening, David French will be our guest speaker at our Annual Spring Gathering at CMU on May 21. Tickets here. If you know someone who might be interested in hearing David French, particularly members of the faith community or those who share his commitment to constitutional conservatism but aren't yet on our list, please consider forwarding this email. The more voices at the table, the better the conversation. |
